The Candida Diet which is used to treat a condition called
candidiasis, an overgrowth of yeast (Candida) in the intestinal system
is an extremely hard diet to adhere to. The restrictions of this diet
are hard for most adults to stick to, myself included. The diet
guidelines suggest eliminating all forms of sugar, many whole grains,
processed foods, preservatives and most condiments. So if adults have a
hard time sticking with this diet then what about children? Is it
unrealistic to expect a child to adhere to such a limiting diet?
I speak from first hand experience that this diet is hard and I am sure that it is much harder for children, especially those of school age. The pressure for children to fit in is immense and most kids that do not have dietary restrictions eat highly processed and sugar laden lunches and snacks at school. Being the odd man out is not always easy for children. My children have multiple food allergies and have to adhere to a very strict diet very similar to the Candida Diet. Unfortunately, they have been made fun of at school. My oldest will no longer bring rice cakes to school for snack because she was getting made fun of. Class parties also become a big issue for children trying to follow a Candida Diet. Classmates are indulging in cupcakes while they are eating boring low carbohydrate snacks. Although children may encounter some difficulty I believe that due to increasing acceptance of different types of elimination diets that have been shown to alleviate symptoms of autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, asthma and allergies,
a child can realistically adhere to the dietary restrictions of the Candida Diet. The right support is instrumental in helping a child adhere to this diet. This must be a team effort with all family members, teachers and school personnel working to help the child not feel so isolated. The following are some ideas to help children on the Candida Diet.
Patience is going be the hardest but most important component to helping children adhered to the diet. You can not expect a child to go from eating happy meals, Popsicles and candy one day to eating veggies and grilled fish the next day. It may take some time but don't falter. Prepare and offer only Candida Diet friendly meals and snacks and expect and be patient with protests.
Prepare a bag for school with non-perishable Candida Diet Snacks that your child likes. This way if there is a party your child can just grab one of their approved snacks and not feel so left out. If the class is having pizza or other party food, try to prepare a special lunch for your child. I have made a gluten free/yeast free pizza and chicken nuggets and French fries for my daughter to bring to school for class parties.
Buying a thermos will increase the offering of lunches you can send to school. It is difficult to make a simple sandwich on the Candida diet so don't. I send pasta, soup, stew and even chicken nuggets and fries in the thermos. It stays warm until lunch time and everyone is happy.
Keep approved snacks on hand at all times. Hungry children are not fun. Sometimes you will be stuck in traffic or caught somewhere longer than you plan. It is important to keep Candida Diet friendly snacks in your purse, car and readily available in the house so you don't get caught.
